A couple of weeks ago I asked on social media what can I do to help? And something couples often worry about are the couple portrait ideas and how to pose. Not many of us are used to being in front of the camera, but I know you want to look our best on our wedding day. We want to make sure we don’t do any posing no no’s. And that is why you pick a fine art wedding photographer, someone who is creative, someone who capture as you are, but the best version of you.
For many years I worked in magazines, working on photoshoots and with models, selecting the best photographs from a fashion shoot. I love finding the best in everyone, all my clients. And that experience definitely helps and I love translating it to my work. But I have a few tips, because I like so many of you don’t always love photos of myself. But years of practice has definitely helped
Practice couple portrait ideas
One way you can practice is of course to have an engagement shoot or pre-wedding shoot. This gives you a chance to get to know your photographer and go to a location you love, obviously at the current time we cannot have shoots however in the not too distant future we hopefully will be able. BUT schedules are always hard for couples to work around so this blog isn’t just about telling couples they should have an engagement shoot it is also about things you can do now and at home yourselves.
You can tape your own phone to a door on selfie mode and hit timer. Practice posing together, head to magazines, my website galleries, pinterest to inspire you and think about which poses you like best when you look back at your photographs.
With my booked in couples I have been offering couple portrait ideas and posing practice over facetime. You just need an iphone , good wifi connection and we can have some fun on a virtual shoot. Drop me a message and lets chat about doing your own one!
THIS IS IPHONE SHOTS NOT CAMERA BUT PERFECT FOR VIRTUAL POSING PRACTICE VIA FACETIME
Know your angles
Have you ever had a friend who only likes photos from a certain angle. Perhaps you aren’t so keen on some photos when you love others. One thing I often ask couples to do, is gather photos you love and ones you don’t. Think about what you do or do not love about a photo. I love photos with my fringe facing from my left side. I like the way my hair frames my face that way. But like all of us its personal, my friends and family don’t see any difference from the other side. Plus I think its fun to look through old photographs with us as a couple, our friends and family too!
Pinterest poses
I often bring up pinterest, there are hundreds of couple posing for bride and grooms ideas on pinterest. You can get inspired and think about the types of poses you love time and time again. Are they cuddled up close, are they laughing or dancing? What are you drawn to? My lasat post was about ll things punters
Gentle couple portrait ideas
When it comes to the day, you will naturally be relaxed and its hard to not smile and beam from ear to ear when you have just said I do. I am there to help you get the best of your couple portraits and I use what I call gentle posing. I want you to be yourselves but I also want to make sure it looks perfect. I’ll get you to move so you don’t look uncomfortable or unflattering.
You can see me in action below at one of my weddings end of 2018. As you’ll see during their golden hour shots I ask them to move so it is flattering. I’ll move positions to get angles. For example in the video, when I crouch low to get a sea of flowers in the frame rather than the car park behind.
Hopefully this has helped you! If you want to see more wedding poses head over to our wedding photography gallery or these engagement sessions with our past couples Phillipa and Gordon , Leona and Ross or Laura and Dominic
